Lexi has an Ear for Surgeries

For those of you thinking Lexi must be overdue for a surgery about now, you're instincts are pretty good. Lexi had surgery today to get tubes placed in her ears, in order to drain fluids capable of causing hearing issues or ear infections. We arrived at the hospital at 6:55am for the procedure. She had to get an EKG before we could start, as ordered by her cardiologist. She needed to be held still...yeah, right, like that's easy with a one year old that hasn't eaten since 6:30 the night before... but we did eventually manage to get what they needed.

While waiting, I took Lexi for a wagon ride to keep her entertained. She enjoyed people watching, but refused to smile, as I think she is starting to figure out what the hospital means.

Finally at 8:32, they took Lexi out of her room to surgery. At 8:49, the doctor came in to let me know that all went well with the surgery. At 9:01, Lexi was brought back to me after the recovery room. I thought we were never going to be allowed to leave, as they said she needed to drink apple juice out of a bottle to prove she was well enough to go home. Since she has never had apple juice, and since the very sight of a bottle makes her scream, I knew that we probably would be admitted based on that. Finally, though, the nurse said I could do water out of a sippy cup. So by 9:46, we were in the car on our way home. She handled the surgery really well and was laughing all afternoon and apparently pain free. After what she's been through, this probably was a breeze! We're just glad it is over and hope this is her last surgery (come on heart!).

Sneak Peak at Wrigley

On Sunday, we fully intended on taking Lexi to see her first game at Wrigley field. The Cubs were playing the Pirates, and it was supposed to be a hot and steamy day in August, so we strategically bought seats in the upper deck in the shade. Lexi got dressed up in Cubs gear, and we got to Wrigley Field early to walk around and show Lexi Wrigleyville.

After Lexi finished posing by Cubs signs and waving to her admirers as they passed, we eventually took our seats. However, less than five minutes before the scheduled first pitch, some rain rolled through for a few minutes, so they put the tarp on the field. Little did we know that it would never come back off! Lexi fell asleep soon thereafter, while we debated whether we should wait it out or exit the park. Finally, they announced they were waiting for another storm front to arrive in about an hour, so Brian made the decision that we should go ahead and take off since we had the drive to St. Louis ahead of us.

Good thing we did, as about 2 1/2 hours after that with the fans sitting in the stadium the whole time, the game was finally called. So, Lexi did get to see Wrigley field and a little batting practice, and she got to have her first ballpark hot dog, but she still has not gotten to see the Cubs in action at Wrigley or hear "Go, Cubs, Go." I guess that will be a good excuse for Dad to get her back there next year.
