We started speech therapy services for Lexi this week. At her 18-month check-up, I mentioned to the doctor that she still didn't really have any words, and we both agreed that we should probably have her speech evaluated. The results were that for her comprehensive speech, she was only slightly delayed, but for her verbal communication, she was significantly delayed. The recommendation was to come once a week for speech services. After three months of seeing if insurance would cover services, they refused, so we finally got a speech therapist lined up through an organization that is a little more affordable for us. So, once a week our friend Julie is coming to our house to go through therapy with us. So far, we love her. She explained to us a couple things she thinks is going on. For starters, there is the obvious lack of stimulation that comes with long hospital stays that Lexi has had. She also explained that in order to talk, someone needs control of their gross motor skills, which Lexi is just getting on top of by finally walking. These make us feel a lot better about her delay in speech, but we are excited to try new things besides lots of books, songs, etc. that we have been trying in the past. Let's hope her speech starts to take off like her legs seem to be!
