Cooking Class

Our kids, much like many little ones their age, don't have much of an attention span. Even when they get to choose the activity or are playing their favorite games, it seems like they're entertained for 30 seconds and then need stimulation to come from elsewhere.

However, there are two activities which seem to hold both of their attention spans for long periods of time. One of them is watching videos of themselves. We make videos for each of their birthdays showing the prior year in pictures, and they absolutely love them. They won't watch Mickey Mouse or Dora for more than a few minutes at a time in the car, but they'll watch videos of themselves on a continuous loop for hours. We can be accused of many things as parents, but raising kids with low self esteem is not one of them.

The other activity is baking with Mom. Whether it's blueberry muffins, banana bread, or sugar cookies, they enjoy watching every step, and they're more than happy to pitch in by dumping in some ingredients along the way. They dig sitting on the high bar stools at our kitchen island, they do a great job taking turns dumping in ingredients, and they typically get just enough ingredients in the bowl for the recipe to turn out!
